Thyroid hair loss can occur both in hyperthyroidism and hypothyroidism. Increase in production of androgenic hormones, which is one side effect of hypothyroidism, can often lead to baldness in women.  Medicine used to treat hypothyroidism can also cause hair loss. you can experience fatigue, weight gain, depression, constipation, and intolerance to cold if you are suffering from thyroid problems.

  1. Hypothyroidism is treated by replacing the missing hormone. This is accomplished by taking thyroid hormone replacement drugs prescribed by a physician. These drugs should never be taken without a Doctor's advise.
  2. Hyperthyroidism is treated by reducing the excess hormone levels, by antithyroid drugs.
  3. Some foods known as goitrogens may interfere with thyroid hormone production and make your symptoms worse. These include cruciferous vegetables (such as cabbage, cauliflower, and Brussels sprouts), peanuts, and soy.
  4. Exercise can help in prevention of thyroid problems. Any regular activity helps. Yoga is highly beneficial. Some people have even benefitted from visualizing their thyroid producing more hormones during the yoga poses.
  5. Chronic stress may decrease thyroid hormone production. If you have hypothyroidism, then practice a relaxation technique.
  6. Radioactive iodine treatment (RAI), also known as radioiodine ablation is also a way of prevention.
  7. Surgical removal of all or part of the thyroid, known as thyroidectomy is a another way to treat Thyroid.
Once thyroid problem is treated and it comes back to normal your lost hair usually start coming back as well. In most cases hairs lost due to thyroid imbalance are restored back within few months after the condition is treated and taken care of.
