Hair loss during pregnancy is actually common and considered normal in most cases. Most women experience some hair loss while they are pregnant. It happens along with other changes that occur as a side effect of pregnancy, for example hormonal imbalance during pregnancy also causes hair loss. This type of hair loss is however temporary and hair lost during pregnancy usually grow back after it. In woman’s body after childbirth, estrogen level starts decreasing and a decreased level of estrogen is one major cause of hair loss.
During pregnancy, hormones of a woman’s body changes. Pregnant women have a high level of progesterone and estrogen, and these levels drop suddenly after childbirth, this causes their hair to fall. Once the child has been born, the hair follicles begin to fall out. Hair loss mostly occurs between three to six months post pregnancy. Another reason why hair loss is associated with pregnancy is that many women take oral contraceptives for avoiding or delaying pregnancy, and then discontinue the birth control pills when they wish to become pregnant. Discontinuing birth control pills also causes hair loss in women for the same hormonal change reasons. Since many women discontinue their birth control pills just before pregnancy, they associate this hair loss with pregnancy, when usually it is due to discontinuing birth control pills. It can take almost a year for hair to readjust to its normal thickness and straight after the baby is born. Since hair loss during pregnancy is very normal and a temporary phase you really don’t need to worry too much about it. Once baby is born, your hair will go back to their normal condition within a year or so. In many women the hair loss is low however some may experience a significant hair fall.
